Eastview High School and the MSCA proudly hosted the returning 2025 Apple Valley Scholastic, a standout event in Minnesota’s scholastic chess calendar. Led by coach Bob Dettmer and the Eastview Chess Team, with Sarah Wahl and Jenny Bourne directing, the tournament unfolded smoothly from start to finish.
141 players participated in the 5-round, 4-section Swiss tournament. Twenty-six players competed in the open section, 35 in the U1200 section, 33 in the U700 section, and 35 in the U300/Unrated section. The venue offered three spacious playing rooms, a central area for parents and spectators, and a generous skittles space—perfect for analysis and downtime.
Three of the four section champions posted perfect 5.0 scores. Samuel Solberg claimed the Open title without dropping a single game. Vinay Madhan swept the U1200 section, and Yuhan O Gu did the same in U700. In the U300/Unrated section, Tavis Steelman (unrated) led with a near-perfect 4.5.
Thanks to Coach Dettmer’s vision, the event remains free for pre-registered players, opening the door for many first-time rated competitors to experience over-the-board chess at its best.
